Chapter Eleven

The next afternoon, Hallie sat curled in Vicious’ favorite chair and sketched. For the first time since arriving in his quarters, she wore clothing that was made specifically for her. When Vicious had gone shopping that morning, she’d been worried he’d bring back dresses and other nonsense. She’d been pleasantly surprised to find a nice selection of clothing that included mostly practical items like cargo-style pants and thin, comfortable shirts.

Of course, Vicious had snuck in some of the naughtiest lingerie she’d ever seen. Why anyone would waste money on crotchless panties, she’d never understand. Vicious, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to get her in them. She had a feeling tonight would be another educating experience.

Shrill beeps echoed in the quiet apartment. She put her pencils and paper on the coffee table and walked over to the main communication console. She tapped the screen and grinned. “Oh my goodness! Lenny!”

“Hallie!” She grinned right back. “Wow. Can you believe it? You and me on this ship together? Who would have thought, right?”

“I know. It’s crazy how life works sometimes. How are you? Are you enjoying it here?”

“I’m great. I married a sergeant. His name is Hawk.” Smiling, she took a step back and made sure her rounded belly was captured by the camera. “Look! Twins!”

“Whoa!” Hallie stared at the baby bump on the screen. “That’s amazing. Congratulations!”

“Thanks.” Lenny scooted forward again so her face filled the screen. “Look, I hate to make our first conversation in months so serious, but is there any way you can get a message to the colonel?”

“I’m sure I can. Why? Is something wrong? Is it your husband?”

Lenny shook her head. “No. I’m fine. He’s fine. Or, at least, I think he is. Right now, he’s at some kind of war exercise out in space. No, it’s our neighbor.” She glanced away from the camera. “I don’t know what happened over there at lunchtime, Hallie, but it sounded awful. There was all this crashing and a scream.” She shook her head. “I think Deniva might be hurt.”

“Did you call the police?” Vicious had taken time to explain how emergency calls were handled. She knew if she hit the emergency button, one of their military police officers and a medic would show up at her door as part of the standard procedure.

“I did, but they told me that Sergeant Crow had already called in to explain his wife had a cooking accident.”

“And you don’t believe that.”

“No.” Lenny looked so worried. “This isn’t the first time there’s been trouble over there. Hawk and some of the other men have talked to Crow a few times but he’s an impossible man. He and Deniva have been married a while now, maybe a year. I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice tinged with guilt. “She doesn’t come to many of our get-togethers. She’s not from Calyx. She’s a colony girl and she seems to keep to herself.”

Hallie didn’t need Lenny to say anything more. She got it. This woman was likely a victim of domestic abuse.
